      Gaviscon range works by forming a raft over the stomach contents which help prevents stomach contents coming back up into the oesophagus (food pipe), effectively relieving heartburn symptoms

      Directions for use

      Oral administration. Adults & children over 12 years 10-20ml. Children 6-12 years 5-10ml. To be taken after meals & at bedtime. Not recommended for <6years


      250mg sodium alginate, 133.5mg sodium bicarbonate & 80mg calcium carbonate (per 5ml)

      Safety Warnings

      If symptoms do not improve after seven days, the clinical situation should be reviewed. Each 10 ml dose has a sodium content of 141 mg (6.2 mmol). This should be taken into account when a highly restricted salt diet is recommended. e.g. in some cases of congestive cardiac failure and renal impairment. Each 10 ml dose contains 160 mg (1.6 mmol) of calcium carbonate. Care needs to be taken in treating patients with hypercalcaemia, nephrocalcinosis and recurrent calcium containing renal calculi. Contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218) and propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216) which may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed).

      Dosage and Warnings

      • For oral administration. Shake well before use.
        Adults, including the elderly and children over 12 years: Take 10-20ml (two to four 5ml spoonfuls) after meals and at bedtime. Children 6-12 years: take 5-10ml (one to two 5ml spoonfuls) after meals and at bedtime. If you forget a dose, it is not necessary to double the dose next time, just carry on taking as before. If symptoms persist after 7 days, consult your doctor.

      How Gaviscon Original works

      Gaviscon Original Peppermint is an off-white liquid suspension. It belongs to a group of medicines called “reflux suppressants”, which form a protective layer on top of the stomach contents to prevent stomach acid escaping from the stomach where it works into the food pipe causing pain and discomfort.
